Defense equipment maker LIG Nex1 has developed a long-range radar that would allow the nation to monitor airspace over the Korean Peninsula using local technology.
The company said it is currently building the country’s first radar, reported to have a range of about 400 kilometers, placing North Korea within its detection range. Although the technology developed by LIG Nex1 is unable to track the trajectory of missiles, its development is expected to contribute to Seoul’s ability to monitor North Korea’s missile activities.
The company’s public relations department was unable to confirm the timeframe for the production.
At present Korea relies on imported equipment for monitoring its skies. With the cost of equipment with similar capabilities around 20 billion won ($18 million), the radar under development could reduce reliance on imports and open export routes.
