The Korea Herald is expanding its text message service that provides up-to-date news with English learning help.

The nation’s largest-circulation English newspaper has been providing “Herald Topic” since 2010 using short message service technology.

The daily on Monday introduced another version of the service based on the long message service to meet user demand for more detailed news and study materials.

Herald Topic has been well received by its nearly 2000 subscribers for fast, up-to-date local and international news. It also offers Korean translations of a selected word, a time-efficient plus for language learners.

While SMS is limited to 80 characters, LMS offers far richer content, with up to 1,000 characters and translation of several words. It also provides a link to the full article on The Korea Herald’s website.

The text service will give office workers and students the chance to develop studying habits in everyday life with an accessible, speedy and accurate source of news.

SMS is sent three times a day on weekdays and twice on weekends and holidays. LMS will be offered twice a day. In addition to basic services, unlimited news alerts are also offered. Current SMS users who own a smartphone can switch to LMS.

The monthly subscription fees are 3,000 won for LMS and 2,000 won for SMS. First-time subscribers will get the first month free.
