Samsung sells 5 million Galaxy S2s in Korea

Samsung Electronics said Thursday that the company has sold up to 5 million units of its flagship smartphone Galaxy S2 in Korea.

It is the first time that a single smartphone model has reached the 5 million mark in sales in the country, according to Samsung officials.

This also indicates that one out of every four smartphone owners here is using the Galaxy S2, considering that there are about 20 million smartphone users in Korea, its officials said.

As a result, Samsung recorded a 53 percent market share in the local mobile phone market last year, taking the No.1 spot. The firm also became the top smartphone maker globally from the third quarter of 2011.

Equipped with the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and the dual core processor, the light-weight Galaxy S2 features a slim design, improved from its previous version, said Samsung officials.

“We have secured a firm lead in the local smartphone market with our customers supporting the Galaxy S2,” said a Samsung official. “We plan to showcase an increased lineup of gadgets that reflect the customers’ needs in the future.”
