DRAM prices show signs of rebound in recent months

The spot prices of computer memory chips have showed signs of a rebound in recent months, a development that will help chipmakers, such as Samsung Electronics Co. and SK hynix Inc., improve their earnings, according to industry data on Thursday.

The spot price of DDR3 4Gb chips rose 2.99 percent on month in August and 7.2 percent in July, according to the DRAMeXchange.

It marked a price rise for two consecutive months for the first time in 31 months.

Prices for DDR3 and DDR4 4Gb modules also gained 3.7 percent on month in August.

Chipmakers have been suffering from slumping prices of computer memory chips amid a supply glut and tepid demand for personal computers.

Buoyed by a rebound in computer memory chip prices, Samsung and SK hynix saw their chip revenues rise by 4 percent to 8 percent in the second quarter.

Analysts predicted that a firmer recovery of chip prices may be on the horizon.

KTB Investment & Securities expected DRAM prices to rise by at least 10 percent in the fourth quarter, compared with the previous three months.

The brokerage predicted SK hynix to report a third-quarter operating profit of 561.4 billion won ($514.1 million), up 23.9 percent from a quarter ago. (Yonhap)
