Apple criticized for approving “gay conversion” app

Apple has been fiercely criticized for approving the “gay conversion” application which offers guidance on how a homosexual can convert to heterosexuality.

The “gay cure” application, which can be used on Apple’s handheld devices, was created by a religious organization, Exodus International.

According to Britain’s Daily Telegraph, the organization believes in teaching “freedom from homosexuality through prayer and practicing conversion therapy.”

A description of the app on the online shop said:

“With over 35 years of ministry experience, Exodus is committed to encouraging, educating and equipping the Body of Christ to address the issue of homosexuality with grace and truth.”

Offended by the remark, more than 37,000 gay activists signed an online petition arguing that Apple should drop the software.

Apple has already removed thousands of applications considered offensive, although they are a major source of an income. Apple has previously banned an app that allowed users to simulate hurling cartoon shoes at caricatures of former U.S. President George W Bush.

애플이 궁지에 몰렸다. 최근 애플 앱스토어에 등록된 반(反) 동성애 애플리케이션(앱)에 대해 10만명이 넘는 사람들이 삭제 요청을 해오면서 애플이 진땀을 흘리고 있다.

지난 2월 15일, 반(反) 동성애 선교 단체인 엑소더스 인터내셔널(Exodus International)은 웹사이트를 통해 “동성애로부터 회복되길 원하는 사람들에게 도움을 제공”하기 위한 취지로 아이폰용 앱을 출시했다고 알렸다.

이 앱은 애플 측에서 4+ 승인 등급을 받아 앱스토어에 등록됐다. 4+ 등급은 애플이 반대할 만한 내용을 포함하고 있지 않았다는 것을 의미한다.

동성애 권리를 주장하는 단체들은 이 앱에 대해 즉각 퇴출 의사를 밝혔다. 이들은 “불쾌한 콘텐츠가 없다고? 우리는 다름에 대한 권리를 구걸해야 하는 입장이 됐다”며 온라인 청원 사이트 Change.org에 호소했다.

이들은 “엑소더스의 메시지는 증오심에 불타고 고집불통”이라며 “그들은 동성애의 자유를 예수 그리스도의 힘에 거역하는 것이라고 보고, LGBT(성적 소수자)의 삶을 치료받아야 할 대상이라는 왜곡된 정보와 고정관념 등을 전략으로 이용하고 있다”고 비난했다.

이 앱은 엑소더스 인터내셔널 웹사이트의 휴대용 버전으로 제작됐다. 단체의 행사 일정과 관련 뉴스, 엑소더스의 소셜 미디어 사이트와 영상 링크 등이 제공된다. 이들 콘텐츠는 모두 반(反) 동성애 메시지를 담고 있다.

애플은 지난 해에도 비슷한 상황을 겪었다. 핑크뉴스(Pink News)에 따르면 지난 해 말, 기독교 단체가 만든 반(反) 게이 앱인 ‘맨하탄 선언’이 등장하자 이 앱을 삭제해달라는 청원에 7000명이 넘는 사람들이 서명했다.

결국 애플은 이용자들의 항의에 손들고 ‘맨하탄 선언’을 삭제했다. 당시 애플은 이 앱이 “많은 사람들에게 모욕을 줬기 때문에” 개발자 가이드를 위반하는 것으로 간주, 삭제 조치를 취했다고 설명했다.
