Samsung mass produces denser, slimmer mobile chips

  Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top memory chipmaker, said Thursday that it has begun mass production of a new type of mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) that packs denser memory in a slimmer package.

   Earlier this month, Samsung started mass producing the 4-gigabit, low power double-data-rate 2 (LPDDR2) DRAM based on 30-nanometer class technology, the company said in a statement.

   Samsung developed the mobile DRAM device in December, claiming it was the first in the industry to produce devices using the 30-nanometer class technology, which enables more productive, cost-efficient chipmaking.

   The new device is about 60 percent more productive than previous chips, Samsung said.

   The latest mobile DRAM can make smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices thinner, lighter and faster with longer battery lives, it added. The new DRAM device achieves the same density by stacking only two chips, instead of four, allowing for the reduction in size.    

   "The new mobile DRAM will enable our OEM customers to move quickly in launching better differentiated high-performance mobile devices into the market," Hong Wan-hoon, executive vice president of memory sales and marketing at Samsung, said in a statement.
