LG Electronics said Wednesday its water purifier sales in India soared 50 percent in the first quarter compared to a year ago, but did not reveal specific sales figures.
LG entered India’s water purifier market in July 2014 -- the first time for a Korean company to do so -- tapping the nation’s burgeoning middle class who had complained about the poor condition of drinking water.

With its product sales growing, the Korean tech giant has also poured more resources into the market. In order to respond more promptly to local demand, the company recently built a new manufacturing line in its Indian plant. The company has also increased its staff for water purifier installation and after-sales services by 40 percent this year.
The company plans to launch new products later this year, including those equipped with mineral filter and ultraviolet sterilization functions.
“We will ramp up efforts to offer more localized products and services to lead the market,” said LG’s appliance chief and president Cho Seong-jin.
