LG joins smart car alliance

LG Electronics said Sunday that it has joined the Open Automotive Alliance, a group of global carmakers and tech giants, such as General Motors, Hyundai Motor, Honda and NVIDIA, committed to integrating Google’s Android operating system with cars.

The Korea tech firm showcased its new range of audio, visual and navigation solutions for connected cars at Google’s annual developer conference held in San Francisco last week.

LG’s AVN system, which is expected to be available by 2015, enables drivers to simply connect their Android devices to vehicles featuring Google’s in-car interface platform, and conveniently access their smartphones’ features and functions, the company said in a statement.

“As a top technology company with a strong mobile business, LG has a great deal to contribute to the connected car market,” said Lim Jong-rak, head of LG’s in-vehicle infotainment development.

“LG will strive to strengthen its cooperation with OAA partners to bring connected vehicles to consumers soon.”
