Seoul to announce results of probe into diplomats' sex scandal Friday

South Korea will likely announce later this week the results of its investigation into a sex scandal involving some of the nation's diplomats and a Chinese woman, a government source said Tuesday.

Multiple Korean diplomats at the consulate in Shanghai have been accused of having extramarital affairs with the 33-year-old Chinese woman and providing her with various favors. They were also found to have leaked classified information to her.

The government recently completed its on-site investigation in Shanghai and has been finalizing the probe by questioning related diplomats staying in Korea.

"We completed the actual investigation today and will start internal reporting from tomorrow," an official of the Prime Minister's office told Yonhap News Agency. "The results will likely to be made public on Friday."

Officials said that investigators tentatively concluded the incident is a sex scandal caused by lack of discipline or moral hazard among Korean diplomats.

When the scandal was first reported earlier this month, some raised suspicion that the Chinese woman might be a professional spy. Others believed she was just a visa broker. Her identity remains unclear.
