15세 한인 소녀 골퍼, 새 역사 쓰다

뉴질랜드 교포 리디아 고(15•한국이름 고보경) 가 미국여자프로골프(LPGA) 투어에서 '최연소 우승'이라는 새로운 역사를 썼다.

아마추어 선수인 리디아 고는 27일(한국시간) 캐나다 브리티시컬럼비아주의 밴 쿠버 골프장(파72•6천427야드)에서 열린 캐나다여자오픈 마지막날 4라운드에서 단독 선두로 출발, 5언더파 67타의 맹타를 휘둘렀다.

합계 13언더파 275타를 적어낸 리디아 고는 올해 에비앙 마스터스 챔피언 박인비(24)를 3타차로 따돌리고 우승했다. 

1997년 4월24일생(15세4개월2일)인 리디아 고는 이번 우승으로 지난해 9월 나비 스타 클래식에서 16세의 나이로 정상에 오른 알렉시스 톰슨(미국)의 LPGA 투어 최연소 우승을 기록을 갈아치웠다.

또한 아마추어 선수로서는 다섯번째이자 1969년 조앤 카너(버딘스 인비테이셔널우승) 이후 43년만의 우승이다.

아마추어 선수는 상금을 수령할 수 없어 우승상금 30만달러는 박인비가 차지했다.  

한국에서 태어나 6살 때인 2003년 부모와 함께 뉴질랜드로 건너간 리디아 고는 11살 때 뉴질랜드 여자 아마추어 메이저대회에서 최연소 우승하는 등 각종 대회에서 뛰어난 성적을 내 주목을 받아왔다.

리디아 고는 올해 1월 호주 뉴사우스 웨일스오픈에서 프로대회 세계 최연소 우승을 차지해 이름을 알렸고, 13일에는 US여자아마골프대회에서 정상에 올랐다.

이번주 대회에 들어서도 안정된 경기력을 보여준 리디아 고는 마지막 라운드에서 LPGA 상금랭킹 1위를 달리는 스테이시 루이스(미국), 한국여자골프의 간판 신지애(24•미래에셋)와 동반플레이를 펼쳤지만 전혀 주눅들지 않았다.

오히려 면도날 같은 아이언샷과 과감한 퍼트는 오히려 정상급 선수들을 압도했다.

전반에 버디 2개, 보기 1개를 묶어 1타를 줄인 리디아 고는 후반들어 더 무서운 집중력을 발휘했다.

10번홀(파5)에서 13번홀(파4)에서 4개홀 연속 버디를 잡아낸 리디아 고는 15번홀(파4)에서도 1타를 줄여 2위 그룹과의 격차를 4타로 벌렸다.

여유있게 18번홀(파4)에 올라온 리디아 고는 세번째 샷만에 볼을 그린 위에 올린 뒤 2퍼트로 마무리해 보기를 적어냈지만 아무도 그의 우승을 막지 못했다. 

신지애는 오랜만에 챔피언조에서 마지막 라운드를 시작했지만 1타를 줄이는데 그쳐 최나연(25•SK텔레콤), 최운정(22•볼빅)과 함께 공동 3위로 대회를 마쳤다.

S. Korean-born teenager becomes youngest LPGA winner

South Korean-born teenager Lydia Ko became the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour Sunday in Canada.

At the Vancouver Golf Club, Ko, who now resides in New Zealand, captured the CN Canadian Women's Open by three shots over South Korean Park In-bee.

Ko, 15, shot a five-under 67 in the final round for a 72-hole total of 13-under.

American Lexi Thompson had previously been the youngest LPGA winner, taking the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic at 16 years, seven months and eight days. Ko turned 15 in April this year.

Ko took a one-shot lead into Sunday and pulled away with five birdies on the first six holes on the back nine. Her 67 in the final round tied two others for the best score of the day.

Ko is still an amateur and is ineligible to collect the winner's check of US$300,000. Park, the runner-up, instead took home the money.

Park was one of five South Koreans in the top-10. Choi Na-yeon, Shin Ji-yai and Chella Choi shared the third place at eight-under.

Kang Hae-ji shot a 67 in the final round to finish in the sole possession of eighth at six-under.

Ko, who moved to New Zealand with her family at age 6, is the first amateur winner on the LPGA Tour since JoAnne Carner in 1969.

In January, Ko won the New South Wales Open in Australia, about three months before her 15th birthday, to become the youngest player, male or female, to win a professional golf event. It was later broken by a Canadian teenager Brooke Henderson in June.

Ko also won the U.S. Women's Amateur in Cleveland two weeks ago. (Yonhap News)
