Samsung Electronics Co., the world's top smartphone maker, on Friday unveiled its Galaxy S3 mini phone, a compact version of the flagship Galaxy S3 device, to cater to consumers looking for a practical option.
The 4-inch smartphone is powered by Jelly Bean, the latest version of the Android operating system, and runs on a dual-core processor, Samsung said in a press release, noting the device is an "optimal choice for consumers who are looking for more practical smartphones." Details on availability and price were not provided.
"We're now delighted to bring the Galaxy S3's revolutionary design, intuitive usability and intelligence to the Galaxy S3 mini in a more compact form," said Shin Jong-kyun, who leads Samsung's IT & Mobile Communications Division.
In a bid to target mid-tier consumers, the South Korean tech giant has scaled back the size, weight and features of the petite version of its flagship phone.
The 4-inch display, which is equivalent to Apple Inc.'s iPhone 5, is smaller than the Galaxy S3's 4.8-inch and Galaxy Note 2's 5.5-inch. It is also smaller than the 4.7-inch screen size of LG Electronics Inc.'s Optimus G.
A 5-megapixel camera has replaced the original version's 8-megapixel version and the 1500 milliampere battery life is also shorter than its bigger cousin's 2,100 milliampere. (Yonhap News)
