A new expansion pack of the online role-playing game World of Warcraft will be released on Sept. 25, according to the Blizzard Entertainment website.
Blizzard is both the developer and publisher of World of Warcraft and its expansion packs.
World of Warcraft is one of the most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing games in the world, and the new expansion pack, titled “Mists of Pandaria,” will be the fourth extension to the game, following its predecessors: "The Burning Crusade," "Wrath of the Lich King" and "Cataclysm."
The Mists of Pandaria update will allow players to explore the ancient continent of Pandaria, offering a new race and new jobs, as well as new martial arts skills.
Activision Blizzard, the holding company of Blizzard Entertainment, reported that the title had 10.2 million subscribers at the end of March globally, down from more than 12 million in 2010.
U.S. digital media expert Ed Barton said in an interview with BBC that the new expansion pack will help the game retain its subscribers though it lost some in recent years as strong rival titles like EA’s heavily-invested Star Wars: The Old Republic has been released.
However, Activision Blizzard’s future is uncertain as its majority shareholder Vivendi, a French media group, has reportedly hired two investment banks to sell its 60 percent stake in the business.
Conglomerates like Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, and Chinese Internet company Tencent were referred to as prospective buyers, but none of them were willing to pay $10 billion for the stake.
