Samsung to focus on smart, 3-D TV sales in Middle East

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said that it will focus on smart and 3-D TV sales in the Middle East in order to strengthen its dominant presence in the large emerging market.

The company said it aims to aggressively market its latest high-end TV sets and expand cooperative tie-ups with content suppliers to solidify its status as the No. 1 smart electronics product supplier in the area.

Samsung said that it was able to pull off TV sales growth of 26 percent last year despite the general economic downturn. Its overall market share for TV sets hit 33.2 percent.

In the 3-D TV sector, the company’s dominance reached 46.9 percent of the total market, with its control of smart TVs hitting 39 percent in 2011.

Samsung said that the launch of the newest ES8000 and ES7500 series smart TVs, and greater availability of content such as interactive Internet, 3D and social network services can enhance its leading position in the area.

Samsung said it started a smart news services in cooperation with Qatar-based Al Jazeera on Thursday, and will provide the latest Hollywood movies from Warner Brothers and Walt Disney to customers who buy its smart TVs in Turkey.

Other applications to be provided include the ability to check public utility charges in Dubai and establishing university-level smart TV courses in Israel.
