Korean films chase top prizes at Locarno film festival

Korean film “Gyeongju,” starring Actor Park Hae-il and actress Shin Min-a, will compete for top prizes at the Locarno International Film Festival, the production firm Invent Stone Corp. said Thursday.

The movie was enlisted on the international competition segment of the upcoming 67th edition of the festival. The Swiss competition will run from Aug. 6-16.

“Gyeongju,” directed by renowned Chinese filmmaker Zhang Lu, follows the daylong journey of a young university professor to Gyeongju, the capital of Silla during Korea’s Three Kingdoms Period. In the city, he encounters a beautiful and mysterious teahouse owner.

Korean drama film “Alive,” directed by Park Jung-bum, advanced to the same competition section as “Gyeongju.”

Launched in Locarno, Switzerland, in 1946, the festival is one of the most recognized film festivals in Europe along with Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

Director Hong Sang-soo won the best director‘s award for film “Our Sunhi” at the 2013 edition of the festival.
