RASKB to host talk on Korean shamanism

Lecturer Liora Sarfati of Tel Aviv University will lead a talk on Tuesday, July 29, about Korean shamanism in the media.

Korean shamans, known as mudang or manshin, still exist today, continuing their ancient practices even within the Seoul metropolitan area.

Sarfati will discuss the portrayal of Korean shamanism in film, TV and online to demonstrate the tradition’s presence in modern society.

She will also present her ideas on how technological advances have contributed to the survival of this ancient practice.

The talk will be held from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the second floor Residents’ Lounge in Somerset Plaza.

Admission is 7,000 won for nonmembers of the Royal Asiatic Society and free for members.
