After Boston blast, iconic photo of elderly runner goes viral

A photo of an elderly runner knocked out by the deadly blast at the Boston Marathon went viral.

The photo shows an old man lying on the ground while police officers run about, epitomizing the confusion and horror the bombing brought.

After the photo went viral online, the U.S. media tracked down the man in the picture and identified him as 78-year-old Bill Iffrig from Lake Stevens, Washington.

According to the Associated Press, Iffrig was near the finish line when he was knocked down by one of the two bombs. Iffrig said he was just 1.5 meters away from the bomb and that it was a “close one.”

He was hoisted up by race officials and walked away with minimal injury.

Iffrig is a third-time participant in the Boston Marathon.

On Monday, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing at least three people and injuring over 140.
