Two Korean films, “Steel Cold Winter” by Choi Jin-sung and “Our Sunhi” by Hong Sang-soo, are being shown at the Munich Film Festival, which started Friday.
“Steel Cold Winter” will be screened under the “Spotlight” section that showcases films from world-famous directors. This is the second time a Korean film has been invited to this section. “The Thieves” by Choi Dong-hoon was invited to Munich last year.
“Our Sunhi” will be screened in the “International Independents” section, which showcases innovative and unique art house films from around the world.
“Steel Cold Water” is a melodrama about a high school boy who becomes traumatized when a trivial remark pushes his friend to commit suicide, and his relationship with a mysterious young girl who is the subject of vicious rumors. As they find things in common, they become closer, forming a precarious relationship.
The film “Our Sunhi” revolves around a film graduate, Sunhi, as she visits her school to ask a professor for a letter of recommendation to study abroad in the U.S. After a long hiatus, she ends up meeting three men from her past, the professor, her ex-boyfriend and an upperclassman she was close with. By engaging with these men, she tries to find about her real self.
The Munich Film Festival, in the past, invited Korean films with both cinematic quality and popular appeal, including Bong Joon-ho’s 2009 film “Mother.” The festival runs until July 5.
