Researchers estimated that people who consumed between 10 and 25 percent of their calories from added sugar had a 30 percent higher chance of cardiovascular mortality. For people who consumed more than 25 percent of their calories from added sugar, the risk nearly tripled.

According to the research, sugar has adverse health effects as “empty calories” that supply food energy but little or no other nutrition. The authors recommended not to consume too much sugar.
