Soccer official to seek Korea support

The top Asian soccer official in the running for the FIFA presidency will visit Seoul this week to seek South Korean support for his race, football officials here said Monday.

Mohammed Bin Hammam, president of the Asian Football Confederation, will arrive in Seoul later Monday and hold meetings with top South Korean football figures on Tuesday.

Officials here said Bin Hammam, a Qatari, will sit down with Cho Chung-yun, head of the Korea Football Association, and Chung Mong-joon, the honorary chairman of the KFA and the outgoing FIFA vice president.

Bin Hammam is scheduled to hold a press conference on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Hotel Shilla in Seoul, along with Cho, Chung and Chung Mong-gyu, commissioner of the K-League, the top division football league here. South Koreans are expected to throw their support behind Bin Hammam.

Bin Hammam has announced he will challenge the incumbent Sepp Blatter for the top global football post. The vote will be held on June 1 at the FIFA Congress in Zurich, Switzerland.
