S. Korean tourist shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Philippines

HANOI -- A South Korean tourist was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the northern Philippine city of Angeles, the South Korean Embassy in Manila said Wednesday.

The 65-year-old South Korean man, surnamed Hur, was hit by several bullets shot by two gunmen riding a motorcycle at around 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday (Philippine time), according to the embassy. He died at the scene.

He was returning to a hotel with three other fellow travelers when the gunmen approached them, the embassy said. The other three, who were not hurt, briefly fled the scene, according to the embassy.

The motive for the shooting and the identities of the gunmen have yet to be known.

The embassy said it is the first murder case on a South Korean tourist in the Philippines although several South Korean residents there have been kidnapped or killed in the country usually for mercenary motives.

Hur arrived in the country last Sunday with the three friends, and was planning to return home on the day of the accident, according to the embassy. (Yonhap)
