Chung to be awarded German medal of merit

Chung Mong-joon, a veteran lawmaker with the Saenuri Party, will be awarded Germany’s Commander’s Cross for his support to Germany in its hosting of the World Cup in 2006.

German Ambassador Rolf Mafael will award Chung the medal, also called the Federal Cross of Merit, for his help in promoting the positive image of Germany through the World Cup. at his residence on Monday.

Chung is honorary vice president of FIFA. Korea and Japan hosted the World Cup in 2002, and Chung supported Germany’s bid to host the games in 2006. Franz Beckenbauer, who led Germany’s 2006 bid, will participate in Monday’s ceremony.
