Artists performing in Seoul to get 50 public ‘open theaters’

Seoul City said Tuesday that it will create art performance venues in 50 spots around the city for artists and citizens to show off their artistic talent.

The “Open Art Theater” project will start on May 22, with “talent donations” by professional and amateur artists.

Those who participate in the project will be given some financial support for their performances.

A total of 50 locations were selected according to the size of performance and members.

The five main venues, Seoul Plaza, Dream Forest Arts Center, Seoul Children’s Grand Park and Garden 5, will host quality performances once a week by acts such as the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Venues near subway stations and traditional markets as well as major streets and streams will be open for amateur artists and citizens.

During the period, the city also plans to run the “Culture Delivery Service” program in which performers visit welfare facilities on a regular basis.

“Through the art project, citizens will have more artistic opportunities to enjoy. Talented artists will also have a chance to debut,” said Ahn Seung-il, director-general of culture and tourism.
