An expat singer-songwriter will team up with a Korean visual artist to launch an EP on Saturday.
Californian musician Leslie Early will celebrate the release of “Chasing the Dark” at Playcafe Yup in Hongdae.
She will be teaming up for the showcase with American-born video artist Kwon Soo-jin, who made the video for her first single from the EP, “Tangled.”
Early’s gentle folk-tinged acoustic songs and soft voice have a dreamlike quality, which matches beautifully with Kwon’s simple, whimsical line-drawing animations.
Kwon, whose first breakthrough was at the RESFEST film festival in the United States in 2004, will present the video for the record’s second single, “Dreaming of New York.”
Kwon will exhibit some of her drawings and explain the process of how she uses them to make animations by scanning, enlarging and animating them.
“Leslie’s music is very quiet and simple, but somehow it moves people’s emotions,” said Hannah Shin, who organized the collaborative project.
“It’s very similar to Soo-jin’s work, which is also simple and doesn’t use many after-effects. It’s subtle, sensitive and emotional.”
Shin and Early met through couch-surfing in Seoul, and they decided to set up Pebbles, a label acting as a platform for the music project.
Early and Kwon also released videos for songs from Early’s first album “Your Car,” but this is the first official Pebbles project.
They were able to fund the album thanks to financial support from more than 30 people.
The showcase begins at 5 p.m. and will last two hours. Entry is free and the label promises free cookies and brownies provided by the cafe.
To get to Playcafe Yup, leave Hongdae Station Exit 1 and walk straight. Cross the main road and take the first right. Walk for two blocks and bear right at the crossroads. The venue is on the right.
