A collection of some of the most prized comic books ever published is expected to fetch more than $2 million at auction this week in the U.S.
Michael Rorrer said he thought his great uncle Billy Wright's comics were cool, but he didn't realize how valuable they were for months after finding the 345 comics neatly stacked in a basement closet while clearing out his great aunt's home after her death.
Rorrer said he was telling a co-worker about Captain America No. 2, a 1941 issue in which the hero bursts in on Adolf Hitler, when the co-worker mused that it would be something if he had Action Comics No. 1, in which Superman makes his first appearance.
``I went home and was looking through some of them, and there it was,'' said Rorrer, who began researching the collection's value in earnest.
The collection includes 44 of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide's list of top 100 issues from comics' golden age.
``The scope of this collection is, from a historian's perspective, dizzying,'' said J.C. Vaughn, associate publisher of Overstreet.
Rorrer said his great uncle, who died in 1994, never mentioned his collection.
The Action Comics No. 1 is expected to sell for about $325,000. A Detective Comics No. 27, the 1939 issue that features the first appearance of Batman, is expected to get about $475,000. And the Captain America No. 2 with Hitler on the cover that had caught Rorrer's eye is expected to bring in about $100,000.
``This is just one of those collections that all the guys in the business think don't exist anymore,'' said Lon Allen, the managing director of comics for Heritage Auctions, the auction house overseeing the sale. (AP)

지하실에 있던 만화책 알고보니 23억원

로어는 지난해 2월 돌아가신 종조모의 지하실을 청소하다 차곡차곡 쌓인 만화책 345권을 발견했다.
만화책은 1994년 세상을 떠난 종조부 빌리 라이트가 수집해 남긴 것으로, 로어 는 발견 당시 만화책의 가치를 전혀 알지 못했다.
몇 달 후 이 만화책 중에 1941년에 출판된 '캡틴아메리카' 2권이 있다는 얘기를 들은 로어의 한 동료는 수집품 속에 액션코믹스 1권도 있을지 모른다며 흥분했다.
액션코믹스 1권은 미국의 영웅 캐릭터 중 가장 유명한 슈퍼맨이 처음 등장하기 때문이다.
로어는 수집품 속에서 그 만화책을 찾았고 나머지 책들도 상당한 가치가 있음을 알게 됐다.
종조부의 수집품에는 미국 만화책 전성기에 출판된, 거래 가격 상위 100대 만화 책 가운데 무려 44권이 들어 있었던 것.
만화 가격집 오버스트리트 코믹북 가이드의 공동 발행인 J.C. 본은 21일 "역사 적 관점에서 볼 때 수집품의 범위는 현기증이 날 정도"라고 평가했다.
로어의 만화 수집품은 22일(현지시간) 경매업체 헤리티지옥션에서 경매에 나올 예정이다.
배트맨이 처음 등장하는 디텍티브코믹스 27권과 슈퍼맨이 선뵌 액션코믹스 1권 은 각각 47만5천달러와 32만5천달러 선에 낙찰될 것으로 보이며 히틀러가 표지에 등 장하는 캡틴아메리카 2권은 10만달러에 팔릴 것으로 예상되는 등 로어는 이번 경매 로 약 200만달러를 벌어들일 수 있을 것으로 전망된다.
