Han Soon-chul wins silver in men's lightweight boxing

South Korean boxer Han Soon-chul took silver in men's lightweight boxing Sunday, the final day of the London Olympics, for the country's last medal here.

Han was overwhelmed by the top-seeded Vasyl Lomachenko of Ukraine, who took the three-round match by the score of 19-9.

Han is the first South Korean boxer to reach an Olympic final in 16 years. The country has been shut out of Olympic boxing titles since 1988.

Lomachenko hardly broke a sweat in the gold medal bout. After the first round, Lomachenko built a 7-2 lead with quick straight punches. Han held his ground in the second round, but the score was still 11-5 with one round left. Lomachenko, who won the gold in the now-defunct featherweight class in Beijing, beat Han 8-4 in the third round score.

South Korea has closed its campaign here with 13 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals, and was firmly entrenched inside the top-10 on the medal table. Its stated goal for these Olympics was to win at least 10 gold medals for a top-10 finish. (Yonhap News)
