The Ministry of Public Administration and Security unveiled the names of the worst tax delinquents Sunday with former Hansol Group vice chairman Cho Dong-man and GS Engineering and Construction topping the lists of individuals and corporations, respectively.
The disclosure is part of the government’s efforts to tighten its reins on high-income tax dodgers and address growing concerns of the budget balance.
The list includes 7,546 individuals and 3,983 corporations that owe at least 30 million won ($28,000) in taxes for more than two years. Their unpaid taxes totaled 1.689 trillion won, the ministry said.
Among individuals, Cho was found with the highest amount of unpaid taxes with 5.8 billion won, followed by Shin Dong-A Group chairman Choi Soon-young with 3.6 million won, former Kolon TNS chairman Lee Dong-bo, with 29 billion won and former Hanbo Group chairman Chung Tae-soo with 2.5 billion won.
Among corporations, GS E&C was the largest tax delinquent with 13 billion won. Among the firms appearing on the list for the first time, Il Gwang Gong Young, did not pay 2.1 billion won in local income taxes.
The number of people who have not paid taxes in Seoul City increased by 440 to around 5,000 compared to last year. Around 480 of them are new to the list.
