Grounded singer Rain submitted book reviews as punishment assignment

Conscripted K-pop star Rain has read two books and submitted their reviews to his boss while being grounded in his unit for a week, a punishment for dating a top TV actress while on official duty, military officials said Tuesday.

The 30-year-old singer, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, was ordered not to leave his unit for one week, the lightest form of discipline, after he was spotted dating actress Kim Tae-hee while on work-related leave last month.

Under military regulations, Jung, an Army corporal in a unit that provides programming for TV and radio to promote the military, is banned from making private contact with civilians without approval while on duty.

During the probation period that ended Tuesday, he was ordered to read two books -- "It Hurts Because It's the Youth," a best seller essay for youth written by Seoul National University Prof.

Kim Ran-do, and "The Wolf of Wall Street" by American writer Jordan Belfort, a story about a New York stockbroker who refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case.

The military decided to punish him to set an example as the news of his dating stirred a strong public backlash. The military has often come under public fire for giving special treatment to celebrities on service.

All able-bodied South Korean men are conscripted to serve roughly two years in the armed forces.

According to the defense ministry, Rain spent 71 days off duty last year, his first year serving in the unit. The number is much larger than the average 43 days given to ordinary soldiers from 2009 through last year. He will be discharged in July. (Yonhap News)

가수 비 근신 끝! '마음만은 최전방..'

군 복무 중인 가수 비(본명 정지훈ㆍ31)가 근신기간 ‘아프니까 청춘이다’와 ‘월가의 늑대’를 읽고 독후감을 제출하는 등 자숙의 시간을 보낸 것으로 알려졌다.
군 관계자는 15일 “정지훈 상병은 소속부대(국방부 근무지원단 지원대대)에서 추천한 2권의 책을 읽고 독후감을 제출했으며 반성문도 썼다”며 “오늘로 7일간의 근신처분이 완료된다”고 밝혔다.
소속부대가 추천한 ‘아프니까 청춘이다’는 서울대 김난도 교수가 여러 매체에 기고했던 글을 비롯해 총 42편의 격려 메시지를 하나로 묶은 책으로 ‘2030세대’의 공감을 얻었다.
‘월가의 늑대’는 무일푼으로 억만장자가 된 증권 천재 조던 벨포트의 자전적 소설로 레오나르도 디카프리오가 주연을 맡고 마틴 스콜세지 감독이 메가폰을 잡은 영화로 제작 중이다.
정 상병은 공무외출을 나가 배우 김태희씨를 사적으로 만나는 등 군인복무 규율을 위반, 지난 8일 소속 부대에서 7일간의 근신 처분을 받았다.
근신 처분을 받은 병사는 훈련 또는 교육을 제외하고는 평상근무를 하지 않고 징계권자(지휘관)가 지정하는 일정 장소에서 과오를 반성하게 된다.
정 상병은 근신기간 작성한 반성문을 통해 “다른 홍보지원대원(연예병사)들에게 미안하다. 내가 처신을 잘못한 것 때문에 (부대) 전체에 누를 끼쳐 송구하다”며 “남은 군 생활기간(7개월)에 자숙하면서 본연의 임무에 충실하겠다”고 밝혔다고 군 관계자는 전했다.
정 상병은 “마음 같아서는 전방에 가서 근무하고 싶지만 그렇게 한다고 해결될 일도 아니고 주어진 보직인 홍보지원병 임무에 최선을 다하겠다”는 각오도 밝힌 것으로 알려졌다.
다만 김씨와의 열애설로 지금까지의 군 생활을 모두 부정 당하는 것에 대한 억울함도 표현했다.
정 상병은 “홍보지원단원으로 나름대로 최선을 다했는데 이번 일로 지금까지의 활동은 무시당하고 군 생활기간 ‘연애활동’이나 한 것으로 비치고 있다”고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.
월드 스타인 정 상병은 다른 연예병사에 비해 위문공연 출연 횟수가 많았고 잦은 공연으로 인한 허리통증으로 고통을 겪기도 한 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 국방부는 연예병사(홍보지원대원)의 군 복무기강 문제와 관련, 특별관리지침을 마련키로 했다.
특별관리지침에는 공무외출 때 간부대동, 저녁 10시 이전 부대 복귀, 부대장에게 월 단위 활동내역 보고, 과도한 휴가부여 금지 등의 내용이 포함될 것으로 알려졌다.
군 관계자는 “연예병사의 휴가도 취사병 등 다른 근무지원병들의 수준을 넘지 않도록 제한할 것”이라며 “실제 작년 9월 이후로는 휴가를 강력히 통제하고 있다”고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
