Putin to visit South Korea later this month

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit South Korea later this month for a summit with President Park Geun-hye about bilateral relations, peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, and other issues of cooperation, her office announced Friday.

The Nov. 12-13 visit will mark the second time Park meets with Putin since she took office in February. In September, the two leaders met bilaterally on the sidelines of a Group of 20 major economies meeting in Russia's second-largest city of Saint Petersburg.

Park and Putin are expected to discuss ways to move relations between the two countries forward, promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia, strengthen economic cooperation, and facilitate cultural and other exchanges, the office said.

During September's meeting, the two leaders talked about economic cooperation, the North Korean nuclear standoff and the possibility of a long-discussed ambitious project to link railways of the two countries via North Korea and through to Europe.

Putin's visit to Seoul will be the first by a leader from the "four major powers," a term referring to the United States, Japan, China and Russia, since Park came into office. The Russian president will also be the sixth foreign leader to visit South Korea under the Park administration. (Yonhap News)
