Habitual tax defaulters increase

The government on Monday unveiled the personal information of 14,500 high-profile tax delinquents including former President Chun Doo-hwan.

The Ministry of Security and Public Administration disclosed a list of those who failed to pay over 30 million won ($28,500) for more than two years.

Their number rose by 25.7 percent from last year largely due to more business failures in the economic slowdown.

The total amount in arrears also jumped 26.6 percent year-on-year to 2.14 trillion won, while the number of tax delinquents owing more than 100 million won jumped 21 percent to 4,746.

Former Hansol Group vice chairman Cho Dong-man topped the list again with his unpaid taxes rising from 5.8 billion won to 8.4 billion won.

Former President Chun was included in the list for the first time for not paying 46 million won.

Their personal information including name, age, occupation and address is available on each municipality’s official website.

The government will take measures to force the offenders to pay taxes including banning overseas travel, investigating assets and limiting business operations.
