LG Electronics Inc., one of the leading manufacturers of household appliances and electronic devices, unveiled the world's largest curved 105-inch ultra high definition (UHD) TV set on Thursday.

The move effectively ups the ante in the escalating race with its archrival Samsung Electronics Co. to field the largest TV set ever made.

Before the latest unveiling in Seoul, the highest watermark for a curved liquid crystal (LCD) display TV was 65 inches diagonally, while organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs maxed out at 77 inches.

The new TV will make its global premier at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show set for Jan. 7-10 in Las Vegas.

LG said that compared to full high-resolution TVs on the market today, the new device has five times the resolution with 11 million pixels packed into the gargantuan screen. This resolution translates into a crystal sharp picture at whatever viewing angle, the company claimed.

It also said its latest UHD display has an aspect ratio of 21:9 that makes it perfect for watching movies at home. Many UHDs have an aspect ratio of 16:9. The screen used thin-film-transistor circuit arrays that activate individual diodes to prevent degradation of resolution or compromise the viewing angle.

Market watchers said that while LG and Samsung continue to increase TV size as they try to wow consumers, the market for UHD screens is small for the time being, mainly because there are very few video contents that offer this level of picture clarity. (Yonhap News)
