Based on a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, British daily the Guardian reported that at least 70 journalists were killed around the world in 2013.
Syria was the most deadly place for journalists on the job in 2013, with 29 killed. Including the numbers from 2013, the total number of reporters and broadcasters killed in Syria has reached 63 since the conflict there started. A civil war has been raging in the country since 2011.
According to the CPJ, the proportion of victims murdered was 44 percent, while 36 percent were killed in combat or crossfire. About 20 percent of victims died during some other type of dangerous assignment. The victims were mostly covering politics, war, corruption, human rights and crime.
A total of 211 journalists were jailed for their work last year, compared with 232 in 2012.
The CPJ has been keeping records on the number of journalist deaths since 1992.
