NYT: 조 꼴찌 한국 16강행 확률 5%

한국 축구 대표팀이 알제리에 완패하면서 브라질월드컵 16강 진출 경우의 수에 관심이 쏠리고 있다.

한국은 23일(한국시간) 포르투알레그리에서 열린 2014년 브라질 월드컵 본선 H조 2차전에서 알제리에 2-4로 져 조 최하위로 떨어졌다.

현재 한국은 1무1패로 승점 1(-2골)에 머물러 벨기에(2승·6점), 알제리(1승1패·3점·+1골), 러시아(1무1패·1점·-1골)에 뒤지고 있다. 러시아와는 승점이 같지만 골득실에서 한 골 뒤져 최하위를 기록하고 있다.

일단 자력진출 희망은 사라졌다. 한국은 27일 벨기에와의 3차전에서 패하거나 비기면 그대로 탈락이다. 무조건 이겨야 한다. 벨기에에 이긴다는 것을 전제로 16강 경우의 수를 따져보면 이렇다.

같은 시각, 러시아가 알제리를 이겨줘야 한다. 알제리가 이기는 순간 한국은 자동탈락이다. 러시아가 이긴다면 알제리가 1승2패(3점)로 조별리그에서 탈락한다. 한국과 러시아가 1승1무1패, 승점 4로 동률을 이뤄 벨기에(6점)에 이은 조 2위를 놓고 골득실로 다툰다.

이런 상황이 와도 한국은 알제리전에서 많은 골을 허용한 탓에 다소 불리한 처지다. 러시아가 몇 골차로 알제리를 이기느냐가 초미의 관심사가 될 수 있다. 한국은 벨기에를 상대로 무조건 골을 많이 넣고 봐야 한다.

한국이 벨기에를 꺾고 러시아와 알제리가 비기는 상황에서도 16강 가능성은 발생한다. 이때는 러시아가 2무1패(2점)로 최하위로 조별리그를 마친다. 한국은 알제리와 1승1무1패, 승점 4로 동률을 이뤄 골득실을 따져야 한다. 현재 알제리와 한국의 골득실 차는 3골인 까닭에 한국은 벨기에를 4골 차 이상으로 완파해야 벨기에(6점)에 이어 조 2위를 확보, 16강 토너먼트에 나갈 수 있다.

한편 미국 뉴욕타임즈는 각조 꼴찌팀의 16강행 확률을 예상했다.

H조 한국은 5%, 일본은 10%를 예상했고 C조의 그리스는 21%, E조 온두라스는 1%, 포르투갈은 10%의 가능성을 점쳤다. (onlinenews@heraldcorp.com)

Korea in must-win situation vs. Belgium

After securing just one point in its first two Group H matches at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil, South Korea faces a must-win situation against the heavy favorite Belgium in Sao Paulo on Thursday, according to Yonhap News.

The match between No. 57 South Korea and the 11th-ranked Belgium will kick off at 5 p.m. Thursday (5 a.m. Friday in Seoul) at Arena Corinthians.

Beating Belgium, which boasts some of the brightest stars in European club football today, including Chelsea's Eden Hazard, Manchester City's Vincent Kompany and VfL Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne, is daunting enough of a task.
