월드컵 고가도로 붕괴 ... 수십명 사상자 발생

현지시간 목요일 오후 (한국시간 금요일 새벽) 월드컵 대회를 위해서 짓고 있던 고가도로가 붕괴되어 최소한 2명이 사망하고 수십 명이 부상했다고 브라질 당국이 밝혔다.

브라질 미나스제라이스주(州)의 주도(州都)인 벨루오리존치市에서 발생한 이 사고 현장은 이 도시 월드컵 경기장에서 불과 5km 떨어진 곳이었다.

이 붕괴된 고가도로는 월드컵 관련 주요 기반 시설들 건설이 늦어짐에 따라 교통난 해소책의 일환으로 추진되었고 거의 준공단계를 눈 앞에 두고 있었다.

사고현장에는 통학버스 등 여러 대의 차량들이 붕괴된 고가도로 밑에 깔려 있었다. 이 버스 여성 운전사는 사망했지만 다행히도 학생들은 타지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.

현장에 있던 목격자들은 "지진 난 줄 알았다. 땅이 심하게 흔들렸다" 고 전했다.

시당국은 이 사고로 2명이 사망하고 현재 22명이 부상당했다고 밝혔지만 자동차들 안에 몇 명이 있는지 아직 파악이 안됨에 따라 사상자는 더욱 늘어날 것으로 보인다.

Overpass collapse kills two in Brazil World Cup city

An unfinished overpass being built for the World Cup crashed down on several vehicles in Brazil's southeastern city of Belo Horizonte on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring 22.

Globo television images showed the front of a yellow bus crushed under a large stretch of the fallen highway, which is about five kilometers (three

miles) from the city's World Cup stadium and was being built as part of delayed infrastructure improvements for the tournament.

"It was like an earthquake. The ground shook violently," Daniel Magalhaes, who was near the site at the time of the accident, told Globo. "I heard a deafening sound. I looked and saw the collapsed overpass."

Two people were killed and 22 injured, the health agency of the state of Minas Gerais said. The fire brigade had earlier given a toll of one dead and 13 injured.

A firefighters' spokesman said 13 people were rescued from the bus unscathed but the woman driver was killed.

A car was also crushed but it was not immediately known how many people were inside and what their condition was, firefighter spokesman Edgard Estevo da Silva told reporters.

"The vehicle is completely under the overpass," he said.

Two trucks belonging to the construction company were also hit but the firm said nobody was inside them at the time, Silva said.

A total of 14 firefighting teams were at the scene. (AFP)
