KT, LG Uplus turn to corporate clients as new growth engine

Facing saturation in the domestic wireless market, South Korean mobile carriers are turning their eyes to the business-to-business market in a bid to find a new growth engine.

KT Corp., the country’s second largest wireless carrier, launched a Web portal that allows resellers of its cloud-based business management solution Ucloud Biz to efficiently manage their sales channels.

The portal enables the dealers of Ucloud Biz to manage memberships, collect fees and adjust details of offerings on the cloud solution.

Previously, the KT partners had to spend a great deal of time and money in establishing their own webpages to sell the Ucloud Biz services and to develop applications to charge customers, and manage memberships.

“With the new Web portal, KT’s partners will be able to conduct their sales processes more efficiently,” a KT official said.

KT also runs a number of programs to support small-and medium-sized firms in marketing, and research and development based on the cloud system.

LG Uplus, which is vying with KT in the wireless market, has established its U+Biz Mobile IPT ― a fixed-mobile convergence system ― at Korea Aerospace Industries, the nation’s sole aircraft maker.

The system utilizes both fixed and wireless networks to provide a seamless telecommunications environment for users by linking personal devices to office telephone systems.

The U+Biz Mobile IPT allows an employee to share a single phone number for both a smartphone and a wired phone. Workers on the same system can make free phone calls to each other.

LG Uplus also provides messenger applications that allow users to have personal chats or chat with a group in secure ways.

“LG Uplus’ system will be deployed for a wide range of sectors including shipbuilding, and health industry down the road,” an official from the telecoms firm said.
