CJ-hosted K-pop convention kicks off in Jeju

A large K-pop festival created by South Korea's leading content and media company CJ E&M opened in South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju Friday.

It is the first time the annual K-pop convention is taking place in its home country.

KCON launched in 2012 and has quickly developed to be North America's largest annual Korean cultural festival that incorporates K-pop concerts with a marketplace showcasing a variety of Korean products and trends. In April, KCON was held in Saitama, Japan, making it the first Asian country to host the event.

The Jeju Tourism Organization and CJ E&M said they brought the event to Jeju together to revitalize the economy by drawing more tourists to the island.

The highlight of the two-day KCON 2015 Jeju will be a K-pop concert to be held at the Jeju Sports Complex on Saturday night, according to the organizers.

The show's headliners include Shin Seung-hun, SG Wannabe, Block B, Shinhwa, Roy Kim and Teen Top. (Yonhap)
