Schizophrenic booked after ruckus in Busan subway

Busan Yeonje Police said a schizophrenic man was booked without detention Thursday after causing a disturbance inside a subway car by yelling and exhibiting aggressive behavior.

The man, 49 and identified by his surname Han, fought off police who came to contain the situation, and was booked for obstruction of public transportation and obstruction of justice.

The subway train headed for Mulmangol Station was temporarily halted for around four minutes at 8:35 p.m. to let some 20 passengers evacuate.

A false alarm of a gas leak had added to the ruckus, according to police.

Han did not possess any weapon or combustibles, but was under the influence of alcohol.

Han, who also suffers an anger-control disorder, told police he had suddenly been reminded of his broken sunglasses, which threw him into a rage.

Security has been under heightened tension since last week when a man known to be schizophrenic for 10 years wielded a club in the city center in Busan, critically injuring two female passersby.

Busan on Wednesday had proposed to install 80 additional security cameras citywide.
