Park names new vice culture minister

President Park Geun-hye on Thursday tapped a seasoned public servant as new vice culture minister, her office Cheong Wa Dae said.

Yu Dong-hun, a senior official in charge of public communication at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, will fill the post that has been left vacant since his predecessor Kim Chong resigned last month over his alleged link to an influence-peddling scandal involving the president's confidante.

"We judge that (Yu) is well-suited to smoothly handle a series of pending issues, such as preparing for the (2018) PyeongChang Winter Olympics and strengthening the competitiveness of the tourism service sector," Jung Youn-kuk, presidential spokesman, told reporters.

Entering public service in 1987, Yu has served in various government posts, including those related to policy promotion.

A day earlier, the president named a new vice foreign minister, effectively resuming her official duties following several weeks of a hiatus due to the political scandal. (Yonhap)
