US ex-governor candidate 'found homeless in Ukraine'

A man claiming to be a former candidate for the post of governor of the US state of Arizona has been found homeless and lovelorn in the west of Ukraine, aid workers said on Thursday.

The man, aged 53, carries the passport of Cary Dolego who in 2010 was a minor candidate for the governor of Arizona, said Anastasia Beridze of the social services charity in the western Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi that found him.

He was found apparently homeless around the railway station in Chernivtsi, a relatively remote city that lies close to the border with Romania. He was taken to the sanctuary run by the charity, called "Popular Aid".

"He was sitting on the ground and looking at the trains. He looked like a typical homeless person. He was dirty, as were his clothes, and he was very hungry," Beridze told AFP.

The man nonetheless aroused curiosity as he had several suitcases and a laptop computer, she said. He said he had come to meet a young Ukrainian woman who he had met over the Internet.

But Dolego explained that the young woman never showed up and he had been left alone in a country where he did not speak a word of the language and had no money with all his bank accounts blocked.

"To be honest his explanations were hard to understand. He talked a lot, in an educated way. He was not depressed -- quite the contrary, joyous and optimistic," said Beridze.

He was hospitalised with suspected pneumonia but has recovered and should head to the capital Kiev on Monday, she added.

Beridze said the US embassy had already obtained a ticket home for the man and he would return to the United States on Wednesday. The US embassy refused to comment on the issue.

The website of the office of the secretary of state of Arizona lists Cary Dolego of Queen Creek, Arizona as a write-in candidate for the 2010 governor elections in the state.

The name of a write-in candidate does not appear on the ballot but voters can still vote for the person by writing in their name. They are usually given little chance of success. (AFP)

미국 주지사에 출마했던 한 남성이 사랑하는 여성을 찾아 우크라이나로 갔다가 버림받고 노숙자로 전락하는 신세가 됐다.

17일(현지시간) 구호 요원들은 우크라이나 서부의 한 기차역에서 노숙 중인 50 대 미국인을 발견했다. 그는 자신이 지난해 애리조나 주지사에 출마했었던 캐리 돌고(53)라고 주장했으며 실제로 같은 이름의 여권을 가지고 있었다.

그를 처음 발견한 자선단체 직원은 "전형적인 노숙자로 보였고 옷도 더럽고 굶주려 있었다"면서도 여러 개의 여행가방과 노트북 컴퓨터를 들고 있어 의아했다고 말했다.

그는 당시 이 직원에게 자신이 인터넷에서 알게 된 젊은 우크라이나 여성을 만나려고 이곳에 왔지만 그녀가 나타나지 않아 말도 통하지 않는 나라에 은행 계좌도 막힌 채 돈 한 푼 없이 남겨졌다고 하소연했다.

구호요원은 "솔직히 그의 설명은 이해하기 힘들다"면서도 그가 교양있는 말투로 많은 말을 했으며 우울하기보다는 긍정적이고 밝아 보였다고 말했다.

구호요원에 발견된 뒤 폐렴 치료를 끝낸 그는 21일께 수도 키예프의 미국 대사관으로 간 뒤 이틀 뒤 미국으로 가게 될 것이라고 덧붙였다.

미국 대사관은 그를 본국으로 보내기 위한 비행기 편을 마련한 것으로 알려졌지 만 이와 관련해 언급을 피했다.

애리조나주 웹사이트에 따르면 캐리 돌고는 2010년 주지사 선거에서 용지나 후보자 리스트에 이름이 기재되어 있지 않은 이른바 `기명투표 후보자(write-in candi date)'였다. 기명투표란 투표용지에 기재된 후보를 찍지 않고 공란에 유권자가 지지 하는 사람의 이름을 직접 써넣는 투표 방식으로, 둘고는 이 기명투표 후보자로 등록 됐다는 것이다.
