New laser treatment reduces stretch marks

Two Korean doctors have found a method to reduce the appearance of stretch marks on the legs and thighs using lasers, Chung-Ang University Hospitals said Wednesday.

Professors Kim Beom-joon and Park Kui-young of the hospital’s dermatology department said that the combination of intradermal radiofrequency and autologous platelet-rich plasma can improve the appearance of stretch marks. The marks are caused by continuous and progressive stretching forces.

A total of 19 Asian women were given three sessions of intradermal RF combined with autologous PRP at four week intervals. Among them, one achieved excellent improvement, whereas seven demonstrated improvement, six showed moderate improvement and five reported mild improvement. None showed worsening of appearance. Twelve of them said they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the practice.

“Stretch marks tend to take a longer period of time to heal. People need at least 3-4 months before they want to show off their improved skin texture,” Park said.

Their findings are scheduled to be published in the International Journal of Dermatology’s June edition.
