Hyundai’s Genesis, Equus overtake Lexus in U.S. market

South Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor Co. is fast catching up with its rivals in the large luxury car market in the United States, already overtaking Lexus, the luxury brand of Japan’s Toyota Motor Co., a U.S. online magazine said Thursday.

In June, Hyundai Motor sold 3,370 units of its Genesis and Equus large luxury cars in the U.S., surpassing the 2,903 Lexuses sold the same month, according to Ward’s Auto.

It marked the first time the South Korean automaker overtook Toyota in the luxury car section.

Hyundai again outperformed Lexus last month in the U.S., selling 3,819 luxury cars, compared with its competitor’s 3,802, it said.

The sales results made Hyundai the third-largest seller of luxury cars in the U.S. after Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
