Weekend box office guide


The Korea Herald offers a guide to what's playing in theaters this weekend.

For those seeking a thriller, check out "Deep Trap," or "Office." For some more light-hearted fun, "Ant-Man" provides a dose of superhero action, while "Straight Outta Compton” will take you to the 1983 Comptom, a U.S. town where the legendary hip-hop group N.W.A. was born. 

The much-anticipated Korean historical drama "The Throne" opens on Sept. 16. 


The Throne (Korea)

Historical drama. Directed by Lee Joon-ik


The tragic story of a father-son conflict in the royal Joseon court of King Yeongjo comes to life in “The Throne.” The film follows the troubled relationship between the king (Song Kang-ho) and the crown prince (Yoo Ah-in) that eventually drove the young prince mad, and then to death.


Straight Outta Compton (U.S.)

Biography/Music. Directed by F. Gary Gray


In 1987 Compton, the biggest weapon that five young men had to defend themselves against the dangerous streets was their music. “Straight Outta Compton” follows the story of how the N.W.A was born, bringing rhymes, beats, and hip-hop swagger to the music scene.


Deep Trap (Korea)

Thriller. Directed by Kwon Hyung-jin


A young married couple takes a vacation to a remote island to get away from their troubles. They stop for a meal at a restaurant So-yeon (Lee Min-gyeong) found online, but end up staying the night at the insistence of the mysterious owner Seong-cheol (Ma Dong-seok). As soon as the couple let down their guard, they discover it was all a trap.


Ant-Man (U.S.)

As Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) tries to piece his life back together after prison, he is approached with a job that puts a strange suit in his hands. The suit shrinks him in size while maintaining his strength. Lang later learns that the technology for the suit is being targeted for evil pursuits, and he must become Ant-Man to protect it.


Office (Korea)

Thriller. Directed by Hong Won-chan


Mi-rye (Ko A-sung) is a lowly intern working with the sales team of a large conglomerate. One day, she finds out that one of the employees on her team murdered his entire family -- then returned to work. With the killer’s whereabouts unknown, strange and horrifying things begin happening at the office.
