Academy cites integrity in pulling Oscar song nod

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says the decision to rescind the Academy Awards original song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone” from the film of the same title is due to integrity.

The academy issued a statement Saturday after it revoked the song’s Oscar nod earlier in the week. The academy discovered composer Bruce Broughton, a music branch member, emailed 70 members of the group to alert them of his submission.

The academy’s statement says Broughton’s personal promotion undermined the integrity of the Oscars voting process and created the appearance of an unfair advantage.

During the nomination voting period, 240 members receive a DVD of film scenes along with the eligible songs. The nominating process is meant to be anonymous, but Broughton identified the song he composed to fellow branch members.
