삼성전자, 갤럭시S8 포스터치 탑재 검토

[코리아헤럴드(더인베스터)=김영원 기자] 삼성전자가 내년 초 공개 예정인 갤럭시 S8에 포스터치(force touch) 기술 탑재를 검토 중이다.

14일 업계 관계자는 더인베스터에 “삼성이 포스터치를 차세대 스마트폰 모델에 도입할 예정”이고 “갤럭시 S8에도 부분 도입을 검토하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

그는 “애플이 지문인식을 트랜드로 만든 것처럼 포스터치도 2018년쯤 대세가 될 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

포스터치란 터치디스플레이를 누르는 압력에 따라 스마트폰기능을 실행시키는 기술이다. 예를 들어 사진을 손가락으로 세게 누르면 줌인이 된다거나 앱을 열지 않고 아이콘을 길게 눌러 세부기능을 미리 보기 할 수 있다.

화웨이, 애플 등이 지난해부터 관련 기능을 선보였고 구글은 안드로이드 OS에 탑재할 계획을 갖고 있다.

삼성디스플레이가 화웨이 메이트S에 들어가는 포스터치 디스플레이를 공급하고 있는 점을 감안하면 삼성전자의 도입도 자연스러운 수순이라는 것이 업계의 관측이다.

삼성의 한 고위 임원 역시 “포스터치가 조만간 도입 될 것”이라며 관련 기술개발이 한창이라고 설명했다.

화웨이는 지난 9월 2일 독일 베를린에서 열림 IFA전자쇼에서 업계 최초로 포스터치를 탑재한 메이트S를 선보인바 있다. 일주일 후 애플 역시 포스터치와 비슷한 기술인 3-D터치를 아이폰 6s를 통해 공개한 바 있다.

최근 구글은 포스터치와 유사한 소프트웨어 솔루션인 앱 쇼트컷(App Shortcuts)을 최신 안드로이드 OS 누가(Nougat) 7.1에 탑재하기도 했다.

Samsung mulls force touch for Galaxy S8

[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics is considering adopting a pressure-sensitive display technology, more widely known as force touch or 3-D touch, for its next flagship smartphones, including the upcoming Galaxy S8, multiple industry sources told The Investor on Nov. 14.

“Samsung is mulling to adopt the force touch technology partially from the S8 but the full adoption qill come in one or two years,” an official of a Samsung supplier on condition of anonymity.

“It is a matter of time before other major Android smartphone makers deploy the technology that will help enhance user interface.”

The force touch technology detects different strengths of press on the screen, allowing users to zoom in photos or to create app shortcuts without opening them.

Huawei’s Mate S, launched on Sept. 2 last year, was the first smartphone to adopt the technology. Apple has also unveiled the feature from the iPhone 6s last year.

Considering Samsung Display, a display-making unit of Samsung Electronics, is a key supplier of the force touch displays to Huawei, the Korean tech giant is highly likely to adopt the display on its own, sources said.

A senior executive at Samsung’s component division who wished to be unnamed also confirmed the company was working on the force touch technology for the adoption “in the near future.”

In April last year, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung’s electronic parts business affiliate, registered related patents with the local patent office.

In the meantime, Google, the operator of the Android OS that dominates with almost 90 percent of the smartphone OS market, has also added a new force touch-based feature, called the App Shortcuts, to its latest Android Nougat 7.1 operating system.
