Imports of Japanese fisheries goods dip on radiation scare

SEOUL (Yonhap) -- South Korea's imports of Japanese fisheries products tumbled 37 percent on-year in the first nine months of this year in the wake of the March radiation leakage in the neighboring country, a report showed Sunday.

South Korea imported 33,700 tons of fisheries goods from Japan in the January-September period, or 63 percent of the total from the same period last year, according to the report by the Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency.

In March, a massive earthquake and tsunami heavily damaged Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, which caused radiation to leak into the air, soil and ocean.

In contrast, imports from Chinese fisheries products rose 10.1 percent on-year to 223,837 tons in the nine-month period, with imports from Russia increasing 11.4 percent to 214,563 tons, according to the report.

South Korea's total imports gained 6 percent on-year to 730,000 tons during the period, with the value of the imports surging 27 percent to US$2.34 billion, it added.

방사능 공포, 일본산 수산물 수입 급감

올해 3분기까지 수입량 작년보다 37% 감소

일본 후쿠시마 원자력발전소의 방사능 누출 사고 이후 일본산 수산물 수입이 지난해보다 37% 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

일본산 수산물 수입이 급감한 반면 중국과 러시아산 수산물 수입은 늘었다.

23일 농림수산검역검사본부에 따르면 올해 3분기까지 일본산 수산물 수입량은 3만3천700t으로 지난해 같은 기간 수입량의 63% 수준에 그쳤다.

중국산 수산물 수입량은 지난해 1∼3분기 20만3천368t에서 올해 같은 기간에는 22만3천837t으로 10.1% 증가했으며, 러시아산 수산물은 올해 3분기까지 수입량이 지 난해 같은 기간보다 11.4% 늘어난 21만4천563t을 기록했다.

올해 3분기까지 전체 수산물 수입량은 73만t(23억4천만달러 상당)으로 지난해 같은 기간보다 물량 기준으로 6% 늘었으며 가격기준으로는 27% 증가했다.

농림수산검역검사본부는 수입량이 소폭 늘어난 것에 대해 연근해산과 원양산 오징어의 생산 부진으로 가공용 원료인 칠레산 오징어의 수입이 늘고 수산물 가격안정을 위해 냉동고등어가 많이 수입됐기 때문이라고 분석했다.

국가별로는 85개국에서 수산물이 수입됐으며 이 가운데 중국산과 러시아산 수입 물량이 전체의 60%인 44만t을 차지했고, 이어 베트남산(4만2천t), 일본산(3만4천t), 칠레산(3만t) 순이었다.

품목별로는 냉동명태 수입이 전체물량의 22%로 가장 많았으며, 냉동오징어, 냉동새우, 냉동고등어 순으로 많이 수입된 것으로 집계됐다.
