Samsung unveils Galaxy knife for April Fools’ Day

Samsung Electronics pulled an online prank Wednesday by unveiling the Galaxy Blade Edge, the world’s first “smart knife,” for a little fun on April Fools’ Day.

The fake announcement, made via its official blog, comes one week before the Seoul launch of the Korean tech giant’s new flagship smartphone Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant.

Largely inspired by the unique curved styling of the Edge, the Blade is a cooking knife equipped with all the features of the Galaxy smartphone, it said.

The “razor-sharp diamond edge” can be adjusted for diverse food items from tomatoes to a lobster tail as its sensor analyzes the user’s grip, dexterity and strength. The water- and fire-proof display allows the user to receive calls and respond to messages anytime.

The device, mimicking the signature feature of the Note phablet, comes with a stylus that can be extended as a wireless meat thermometer or baking tool.

For safety, the blade is activated only by scanning a fingerprint on the home button. Other safety features, running on Samsung’s own Knox operating system, include a human blood sensor that detects blood and makes an emergency call for help.

“The post was made for fun,” a Samsung official said. “The Blade has nothing to do with the concept of our future products.”

Last year, Samsung also posted an April Fools’ Day item about a fake wearable glove called Samsung Fingers ahead of the official launch of its smart watches.
