S. Korean TV makers hold over 60 pct of European market

The combined market share of flat TVs made by South Korean companies reached 62.4 percent in Europe in 2014, far surpassing their combined global share, backed by high demand for premium lineups in the region, data showed Tuesday.

Tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. saw its market share stand at 39.7 percent in Europe at the end of December, with that of its smaller rival LG Electronics Inc. reaching 22.7 percent in the same period, according to the data compiled by market tracker DisplaySearch.

Japan's Sony Corp. trailed the two South Korean firms with 9.2 percent, followed by TPV Technology of China with 6.6 percent and another Japanese maker, Panasonic Corp., with 4.9 percent.

The European market share held by Samsung and LG eclipsed their own sum for the global market last year, which came to 45.9 percent, the data showed.

Analysts said in Europe, where consumers have generally favored high-end TVs over low-ends, South Korean TV makers are better positioned to gain an upper hand as opposed to Chinese rivals that tout price competitiveness.

Samsung and LG also stood firm with a majority share in the North American market in 2014, accounting for 35.4 percent and 13.9 percent, respectively. (Yonhap)
