Samsung files patents for Galaxy S6, S6 edge

Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest smartphone-maker by sales volume, announced Friday that the Galaxy S6 and its “dual-edge” variant are on their way as the firm has filed patents for them in South Korea.

Samsung named the upcoming flagship models the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, according to the patent applications.

The exact names for the marquee smartphones, however, could change any time before their launch, scheduled in March, as seen in the previous cases for other products such as the Samsung Gear S, a standalone smart watch that was initially called the Samsung Gear Solo.

With the patent applications, it has become clear that the Korean tech giant is now working on both the flat-screen S6 and the S6 edge, which features a curved display.

Market watchers said Samsung, which received rave responses from consumers for the Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge, is pushing for a two-track marketing strategy by releasing a pair of smartphones that have different form factors.

“The larger display size thanks to the edges will boost the profit of the display supplier, Samsung Display, as well,” a market analyst said.
