U.K. offers new visa for the talented

The U.K. has announced a new visa program to welcome leaders in science, humanities, engineering and the arts to the country.

The new “Exceptional talent” category will go into effect from Aug. 9, and will be open to those recognized as being at the top of their field, and people who display sufficient potential. There will be 1,000 places available in the first year ― 500 between the start date and Nov. 30, and 500 between Dec. 1 and March 31.

A number of renowned bodies with expertise in science, humanities and the arts will consult with the U.K. Border Agency in the selection process for migrants.

The Royal Society and Arts Council England will be able to nominate 300 people each in science and the arts, respectively.

The Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Academy will have 200 places to offer nominations for engineering and humanities, respectively.

Commenting on the move, Immigration Minister Damian Green said:

“The U.K. is a global leader in science, humanities and engineering and we are a cultural centre for the arts: We will continue to welcome those who have the most to offer and contribute to our society and economy.”

Green added that new category was in line with moves to reduce overall immigration to the U.K.

“Our new exceptional talent route, available for up to 1,000 applicants, will ensure that we continue to attract the brightest into the U.K. and keep the U.K. a global leader. This comes at a time of major reform of the immigration system to bring net migration back down to the tens of thousands, tackle abuses and make sure that the immigration system meets the needs of the country.”
