Poland's president to make state visit to S. Korea next week

Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski will make a four-day state visit to South Korea next week for a summit with President Park Geun-hye about economic and security cooperation, the presidential spokeswoman said Monday.

The Oct. 21-24 visit is Komorowski's first trip to South Korea since he took office in 2010. He will also be the first European head of state to make a state visit to the country under the Park administration, presidential spokeswoman Kim Haing said.

Komorowski is scheduled to hold a summit with Park on Oct. 22 to discuss strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, construction, defense industry and other economic areas while exchanging in-depth views on security situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Europe, Kim said.

Poland was an inaugural member of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission that was established to monitor the armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

During the summit, Park plans to outline her two trademark peace initiatives -- the "Korean Peninsula trust process" and the "Northeast Asia peace and cooperation initiative" -- to seek Poland's understanding and support for them, the spokeswoman said.

"The summit is expected to help the two leaders establish trust and bonds with each other and lay the momentum for strengthening substantial cooperation between the two countries," Kim said.

The summit is also expected to deepen cooperation between South Korea and the European Union, as Poland has been taking active part in the EU's decision-making process, she said. (Yonhap News)
