MBC board votes to fire controversial chief
By Choi He-suk
The board main shareholders for broadcast MBC voted to dismiss company president Kim Jae-chul Tuesday following months of disputes over its unfair news coverage, labor abuses and suspected corruption.
The decision was made during the board meeting of the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, which owns a 70 percent of stakes in MBC.
Five of the nine-member panel supported the proposal to fire him for his recent violations of the foundation rules including appointing executives at its affiliates without consulting the board.
The decision needs to be finalized at the general meeting of shareholders scheduled for Friday.
Kim, who has close ties to former President Lee Myung-bak, has been under pressure to resign from media labor unions and opposition parties which claimed that he hurt the fairness and political neutrality of MBC.
“Kim Jae-chul made a grievous violation of the foundation’s right to appoint MBC executives, and acted against the system for forming and operating MBC’s board of directors,” said Choi Chang-young, the chief of Foundation for Broadcast Culture’s secretariat.
On March 22, Kim posted a list of nominees for executive posts at MBC and its provincial subsidiaries on the company’s intranet without consulting the foundation’s board. On the following day, the foundation put up Kim’s dismissal being put on the agenda for the Tuesday’s board meeting.
Choi added that the foundation plans to begin the process of selecting Kim’s replacement as soon as possible, and that the board will hold a meeting to discuss follow-up measures on Friday. He also ruled out the possibility of the decision being overturned due to opposition from Jeongsu Scholarship Foundation, MBC’s only other shareholder with a 30 percent stake, saying that it is in effect final as the Foundation for Broadcast Culture is the main shareholder.
The main opposition Democratic United Party welcomed the decision saying that it was inevitable and called for allegations that have been raised during his tenure to be investigated.
Kim’s appointment in March 2010 incited widespread opposition from media labor unions who claimed that the decision was a “parachute appointment,” and part of the Lee Myung-bak government’s plans to control the media.
Kim has also been accused of being behind the allegedly unfair dismissal of writers and other MBC employees including those who worked on the often-controversial current affairs program “PD’s Notebook.”
Members of the MBC labor union have staged two drawn-out strikes calling for Kim’s removal since 2010. The main opposition Democratic United Party and other progressive parties have also consistently demanded Kim be dismissed claiming that he was central to former President Lee Myung-bak’s plans for reining in the media.
